If you’ve spent a winter in Star Valley, Wyoming you know the seasons here don’t always play by the rules, and starting ANY construction project in Wyoming can be challenging. Snow can stick around into May, and the first frost can arrive early in October. So when is the best time to start building?

In my 10+ years in the area, I've noticed the spring weather can go from sunny and 60 degrees, to snow/sleet, to rain, and back to snow in the span of a week.
So, the short answer: it depends on your project—but planning ahead is always the smartest first step.
Spring (April–June): Getting Ahead of the Rush
Spring marks the unofficial start of building season, but it comes with its own challenges. Jokingly referred to here as "mud season", warmer temperatures don't always mean were smooth sailing.
This is the time of year when we're rushing to file permits and scheduling sub-contractors so work flows smoothly.
Pros:
Early start to the construction calendar
More flexibility in scheduling
Great time to get ahead of summer material delays
Keep in Mind:
Wet, muddy ground can delay excavation and concrete trades
Temperatures may still dip below freezing overnight
Some areas may have limited site access due to runoff
Best for: Starting a custom home, applying for permits, and projects that need to be "dried-in" before winter.
Summer (July–September): Prime Time for Building
Dry weather and long daylight hours make summer the most productive construction window in Star Valley, Wyoming. My favorite time of year is a hoodie in the morning and that hoodie coming off as soon as we get working!
Pros:
Consistent, reliable weather
Ideal for excavation, concrete, framing, windows, decks, roofing, and siding
Full-speed momentum on site
Keep in Mind:
Schedules fill quickly—book early!
High demand can impact subcontractor and material availability
Paint and stain may dry too quickly in direct heat
Best for: Custom home builds, outdoor landscaping projects, additions, and full-scale remodels.
Fall (October–Early November): Quiet, But Productive
If your project is well-planned, early fall can be a great time to build before winter sets in. The bulk of the summer traffic is gone and everyone can breathe a sigh of relief.
Pros:
Easier to schedule trades
Cooler temps are ideal for interior work
Great time to finish or winterize projects before snow
Keep in Mind:
Shorter daylight hours slow progress
Weather can turn quickly after mid-October
Not ideal for starting new exterior work (although it can be done!)
Best for: Interior remodeling, basement finishing, and wrapping up exterior details.
Winter (December–March): Planning Season
Winter may not be ideal for pouring concrete, but it’s perfect for prepping your next big project. The office time becomes more abundant and I can sit down, gather bids, and work with design professionals to prep for Spring.
Pros:
More time for thoughtful design and planning
Easier to work through permits and approvals
You’ll secure your place in next season’s build schedule
Keep in Mind:
Snow limits outdoor work
Some trades may be unavailable
Supply chain delays are common around the holidays
Best for: Pre-construction planning, design meetings, budgeting, and scheduling for spring builds.
